Pittsburgh Pirates

Founded on October 15, 1881, the Pittsburgh Pirates were originally referred to as merely “Allegheny,” their home-city, which was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907. The press pluralized the city name as the “Alleghenys (not the “Alleghenies”) when referring to the team. Joining the National League in 1887 as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, the team saw early success, winning three NL titles from 1901 to 1903, appearing in the first-ever World Series in 1903, and winning their first just six years later in 1909. Three years later, the team adopted its nickname of 25 years and became the Pittsburgh Pirates. The nickname resulted from when the Alleghenys had “pirated” Lou Bierbauer from the Philadelphia Athletics AA team, who had simply forgotten to include the player's name on their reserve list. Today, the franchise boasts 5 World Championship titles, most recently winning in 1979.

PNC Park is one of baseball's most intimate and beautiful venues. From the main grandstand and along the park's outer promenade, known as the River Walk, fans catch sweeping views of the downtown Pittsburgh skyline, the Allegheny River, and the Roberto Clemente bridge. The park's design inspired much of the plan for New York's Citi Park, and has been mentioned by many publications and MLB personnel as one of the most beautiful parks in the Majors.
