Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals were one of four teams who joined the NHL while professional talent was stretched between the NHL and the rival-league WHA. This was a difficult time for new franchises to flourish, and the Caps suffered from this environment the most, putting up the worst season in NHL history during their 1974-’75 inaugural season with 67 losses and a .131 winning percentage. However, in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, the Capitals came within inches of the Stanley Cup playoffs several times, and there was hope for the hockey club of the nation’s capital. Beginning in 1983, the team began a 14-season playoff appearance streak and solidified its place as a respectable force in the NHL. Still, they only made one Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 1998 and failed to bring home the cup. The Capitals remain a dangerous contender for championship glory today, led by legend-in-the-making Alex Ovechkin, 3-time NHL MVP and perennial First All-Star.

The Caps play their home games at Washington, D.C.’s Verizon Center, located in the Chinatown neighborhood of the U.S. capitol. Formerly known as the MCI Center, the name was changed when Verizon purchased MCI, and due to the arena’s ties to telecommunications companies, it is known as the “Phone Booth” among fans. In addition to the Caps, the Verizon Center is home to the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, and Georgetown University’s men’s basketball team. As a major venue for various events in the D.C. area, the center has been credited with much of the revitalization that has taken place in the Chinatown area.
