Billy Joel, born William Martin Joel in 1949 in the Bronx, is known as an pianist, song writer, and composer. Joel’s father was a classical pianist and his mother insisted he take piano lessons at an early age. In high school, he played at a piano bar to help his mother make ends meet with affected his school attendance. He did not have enough credits to graduate and rather than complete them in summer school, Joel decided to pursue a music career. Since his first hit song “Piano Man” in 1973, he has becoming a best-selling recording artist and best-selling solo artist. He has achieved 33 Top 40 hits over a 30-year span in the United States. Along with being a six-time Grammy Award winner and being nominated 23 times throughout his career. After selling 150 million records throughout the world, he has achieved the title of one of the best-selling artists of all time. Joel has received numerous awards and honors that include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Kennedy Center Honors, which is the nation’s highest honor for influencing American culture through the arts. Aside from two songs that he wrote in 2007, he stopped writing new material after his 1993 album, “River of Dreams.” However, he continues to tour and play his greatest hits to countless sold out crowds. .
