Atlanta Falcons

After a long struggle by Georgia's capital city of Atlanta to obtain a professional football team, the city's dream came true on June 30, 1965, when the NFL awarded its 15th franchise to Atlanta businessman Rankin M. Smith for $8.5 million. This came in part to prevent Rankin from joining the AFL, which subsequently awarded membership to the Miami Dolphins instead. That year saw the newly-formed Falcons' first participation in the NFL draft, and in just 54 days, Atlanta smashed the Minnesota Vikings' new-team season ticket sales record of 26,000, selling 45,000 of their own. The expansion team grew steadily through the rest of the decade and posted its first winning season in 1971. Today, the team has seen 5 NFC South Division championship titles and one Super Bowl appearance (XXXIII).

While construction is under way for the team's future home – Mercedes-Benz Stadium – which is slated to open in 2017, the Falcons currently play at the Georgia Dome. With Falcons tickets in hand, you'll be cheering on the home team in what was the largest dome structure in the world when it opened in 1992 (since surpassed only by venues in London, Australia and Singapore).
