The Arizona Coyotes were established as the Winnipeg Jets, a founding franchise of the short-lived World Hockey Association in 1972, and were one of the WHA's four teams permitted to enter the NHL under a merger in 1979. The Winnipeg Jets entered the NHL with a history as a very successful contender in the former WHA, boasting three of its seven total championship trophies and having competed in five out of the seven league finals. Unfortunately for the Jets, the merger's terms included a reclamation draft that allowed any NHL team which had lost players to the WHA to reclaim them, and most of Winnipeg's best players were lost upon the franchise's NHL entry. After finishing last in the NHL for their first two seasons, the team did improve and make the playoffs many times early in their NHL history. However, due to both financial struggles and difficulty with playoff success in a powerfully competitive division, the team was sold to investors in Phoenix, Arizona to begin competing there in 1996, and after considering several other names such as the “Mustangs,” “Outlaws,” “Wranglers,” and “Freeze,” new ownership settled on the Phoenix Coyotes through a name-the-team contest. Now known as the Arizona Coyotes, the franchise has one Pacific West Division title and is still chasing its first Stanley Cup.
